That comes to about $2.50 in profit per robber.

Selling that shit on ebay takes a lot of time and effort. So really, each one made like $0.50 total.

u/OneDoesNotSimplyFapp 10d ago

Them ebay fees are no joke

Organised crime is basically a pyramid scheme. It promises poor people great riches, but the lower down the chain, the smaller the cut and the fiercer the competition. Their mindset is probably similar to those caught up in pyramid schemes. They probably think they're gonna be rich, but in reality they've not even "earned" minimum wage for the time and effort they've put in.

Congratulations, you've just looted fool's gold.

18

u/Ready_Ready_Kill 10d ago

They should have joined a MLM that one is a legal pyramid scheme. Sorry my bad a pyramid-like structure scheme.

Not true. They sell to local groups. Usually Facebook related or crack head related. They don’t ship. They sell to some trashy person who is trying to get some shit cheaper than usual but not eBay cheap, or a crack head in the moment. I worked at a retail store where we had guys come in weekly to steal shit from us right after we got our shipments These guys also won’t get caught for a while if at all. Police don’t care. Corporate has them “on their radar” along with six million other things. My old loss prevention district manager admitted once that apprehension happens outside of the situation by far because they were traceable; using fraudulent credit cards, didn’t use face coverings, and ONLY got caught because it was a group of people states away called about their hotel room above them making too much noise after hours. Police checked up and saw drugs and credit card making tools in the background. They apprehended them on the drugs and suspected card fraud and it wasn’t until way after that people realized they were the guys flash mobbing the entire chain across the country.

56

u/g1rth_brooks 10d ago

Yup, this happened to my brother in law in San Francisco. The items won’t ever be on the internet, they will get sold face to face to people that don’t care because they are getting a good deal. His store has been robbed 3 times in the last year IIRC

Since when do you need 37 fucking people to rob a shop the size of a lunch box?

1k

u/PinwheelsAndUnicorns 11d ago

Most of the point now is the notoriety. Who doesn't want to be the in the latest viral tik-tok? We're almost certainly going to find significant crossover between the organizers of these retail thefts and the organizers of sideshows. Most of these folks don't even live in Oakland or SF or Walnut Creek--they're driving in from all over, even as far as Stockton.

This is flash-mob crime. It's a new phenomenon. Law Enforcement simply needs to find out how they're communicating (note that this is NOT something local cops do well--you need expertise to deal with this kind of crime, and local cops simply don't have it).

The point appears to be the thrill of belonging and the thrill of disruption--and the thrill of having power in the aftermath, creating fear and chaos. When the backlash comes--and it's coming--it'll be brutal, and these kids will probably regret it then.

Regardless, we need to treat it like the unique thing it is if we want to stop it.

237

u/ten_girl_monkeys 11d ago

Thanks for the explanation. Best one that made sense to me.

But is the real motive monetary gain or just the thrill/hype?

How much can they get from selling them? And then distributing the proceeds? Doesn't seem well thought out. They have to do this multiple times to have profit.

129

u/Worthyness 10d ago

It's a flash mob- so do it for the thrill and for notoriety. I'd wager it's not a truly coordinated group effort. There likely is one actual group that is organizing the actual store to target and the date/time stuff, but relying on viral social media/word of mouth type stuff to just gather a ton of people in support. Then you lay low for a bit and fence some of the stuff to friends/flea markets/facebook marketplace and it's pure profit on your end since you stole everything.

And, fi they're related, they've robbed a nordstrom and Target and a couple jewelry shops, so that sort of stuff is pretty quick to get some good cash even at pawn shops.

What is everyone stealing one item from the store? Why do they need 50 kids

226

u/TheMightyFishBus 10d ago

This isn't about the theft, it's a popularity thing I bet. No way any one person makes off with more than like, 50 bucks of merchandise if they split it evenly. They must have just wanted to rob something.

93

u/MonopR88 10d ago

138

u/BrizMusk 10d ago

where's the police at yo?

310

u/I_l_I 10d ago

Police don't respond that fast even in a well funded area. They don't prevent crime they just make arrests and reports

229

u/botak131 10d ago

They don't even do reports in Oakland. got my gfs and family's car broken in, in the same week and they just told me to go online and do the report. 10.5% sales tax go wheeee

69

u/Embolisms 10d ago

They don't do reports anywhere in the bay. Same thing happened to me when I was visiting my grandma who has cancer, I was there for like two hours with my car parked in some tiny church parking lot on a quiet street with nothing else but a hiking trail nearby.

Realistically though, what can cops do when there's dozens of car break-ins a day and no direct evidence?

22

u/botak131 10d ago

I didn't know how unsafe certain streets of Oakland were until I opened up "oakland crime maps" and honestly theres defenitve Hotspot you can see. Maybe put an unmarked police car in certain Hotspots?

51

u/Embolisms 10d ago

The attitude in the bay towards non violent crime is super lax, aside from traffic offenses lol. I don't think there's any incentive for cops to go after car break ins as opposed to violent crime.

But literally, you can commit a violent hate crime against a 70yo man and get released with charges dropped due to "restorative justice", so I've lost all hope in bay area law enforcement.

Are you fairly new to the bay area? Oakland has always been a hotspot for human trafficking, gang violence, violent crime, etc. I mean you've got great culture, food, eclectic communities, etc, but also a whole lot of sketchy stuff.

Lol imagine police in California being helpful. Petty crimes are ignored there. You could make a living stealing stuff and smashing cars if you want

79

u/Unlucky13 10d ago

I lived in Oakland for all of two years. My car was broken into 3 times. Twice random people tried to fight me for no reason at all. All the streets were in terrible shape. And I was paying $2,500 a month for tiny apartment just to have the privilege of living there.

As soon as COVID hit and my job ended, I got the fuck out so fast. I really did give Oakland a chance with an open mind and a positive outlook. It took only a year and few months to finally break me.

43

u/DarthPlagueisThaWise 10d ago

Even if it’s Louis Vuitton or another wealthy company, well there’s no stock now, so there’s no work for all the employees for at least a few days. Take too much stock and the CSV is ruined, either employees hours go down or the store shuts down permanently. Now you have an empty store and more unemployed people.

45

u/Rough-Culture 11d ago

I don’t understand how you bring that many people in on a crime and don’t get caught?

24

u/dwalbright89 11d ago

I guess because it would still be super quick and the fact that there's so many people just means added chaos.

31

u/Fine_Cut 10d ago

I don't think they necessarily meant caught in the act. It's just a lot of people around and someone is bound to have a big mouth or have someone find out and rat'em out.

17

u/longpenisofthelaw 10d ago

randos on social media in the same area, if I had to guess I don't think these people know each other that well. If Someone put out a message to those in the area somehow with criminal intentions as well you could very well get a mob of people with the intention of stealing shit and minimalizing being caught with also little risk of ratting.

"hey everyone rush x location at x time be quick about it"

I could imagine that there are probably more people who heard the message but these were the ones willing to risk it, and it had some loose form of leadership.

Reminds me of that scene in The Sopranos where Tony's crew drives a couple car haulers to a charity auction attended by rich people, loads a bunch of their cars onto the trucks while the rich folk are inside, and then drives off.

Later, when the rich people come out and find their cars gone, you hear one of the female charity-goers say: "They left all the American cars!"

(Although now that I write that out, I realize that line can be interpreted in two completely different ways--so maybe it doesn't apply here).

Guys let’s not rush to conclusions here. Maybe these people have babies at home that only eat hats and sneakers

As a owner, I would say fuckit, and just start shooting. Hope a jury feels the same Way.

Move your business out of Oakland. Big companies are already leaving SF because of this. Small business owners don't deserve this.
All these people saying "Oh these businesses have insurance."... do that makes it okay?

Do you know how long it takes it takes to file a claim? Do you think insurance is going to pay back 100? Those business owners have to deal with clean up, re-building, re-opening and then got what because it'll happen again.

Small and big business take your business out of the city before it happend to you.

u/hodl_my_beer 10d ago

Anyone who says insurance will cover it has never done anything with their lives. They have never taken the risk of getting a business loan to mmm and worked the long hours and figured out all the stuff that needs to be done to start a business. Fuck them and fuck these thieves.

People bitch and complain about Walmart and Amazon and their crappy policies.

So dumb asses like this rob a small business blind, possibly closing them down. Meanwhile other small businesses to get scared to even open leaving everyone to shop at big box stores.

Brilliant.

And then they will wonder why no one wants to run a store there anymore. 711 had enough of the b.s and closed down two stores in my city. Too much theft and armed robberys.

It’s coming to that I think. I can see it happening and it wouldn’t be wrong. What else can you do as a business owner? No one will help, gotta smack a mag in and drop the bolt.

At some point somebody outside of one of these stores will be run over. Or the first guy through the door will be shot dead. This will turn deadly violent. Every politician in the bay area should be shitting bricks.

They are gonna try this on the wrong place at some point and we are gonna read about a mass casualty event eventually

I wish I could show this to all the jackasses under that Louis Vuitton video who were saying they were fine with it because it’s a big business, it would be different if it’s a small business.

Assholes like this don’t care if it’s a small business or a big business.

After 15 seconds of people continuing to enter the store non-stop, something about this started to feel comedic. Like a Monty Python skit or something.

I work at a Staples and my boss and I had a conversation about something like this the other day. He said he asked our GM what we should do if a whole bunch of people just stormed the store and started stealing everything. The GM's response?

"Tell em to knock over the shelves while theyre at it so we can get a remodel."
