Artificial insemination....

167

u/Current_Elk_550 Dec 06 '21 Gold

Even if it was artificially inseminated, the resulting puppies are going to have so many bone, joint, and health problems because of the extreme size difference between the parents.

This is so incredibly irresponsible and these breeders should be ashamed. This is just breeding dogs for money with no regard to the health or quality of life the resulting puppies will have.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '21

Breeders aren't the only problem here, responsible breeders won't do it and responsible buyers won't buy such dogs. It's the irresponsible breeders catering to irresponsible buys that the blame lies with.

2

u/Current_Elk_550 Dec 06 '21

Totally agree. Greedy, unethical breeders are the issue here, responsible breeders wouldn’t touch these “designer” crosses with a 10 foot pole.

2

I’ve seen a chihuahua-mastiff mix.

7

u/myne Dec 06 '21

I have questions...

3

u/A_BOMB2012 Dec 06 '21

It's a mastiff that was artificially inseminated with chihuahua sperm; that's how they do all mixes of drastically different size. The larger one gets artificially inseminated with the smaller one's sperm. Idk why someone would want that particular combination though, it sounds ugly.

A lot of these designer breeds have behavioral problems. Since the breeders only select for looks and not for things like personality traits and intelligence

u/HmnCllTr Dec 06 '21

I’m concerned about it’s health. But who cares though . It looks so “cute” who cares if it’s has a health condition. As long as it’s “cute” nothing matters.

33

u/SporkoBug Dec 06 '21

Underrated response. Why breed a pup who'll likely have generic problems when you can just get a Vallhund?

They are gorgeous in real life, little wolf babies essentially.

13

u/cardueline Dec 06 '21

So I’m not saying this to argue, as I’m not an expert. But my understanding is that genetic problems largely stem from inbreeding/pure breeding. So generally speaking, a corgi and a husky that are, for all intents and purposes, completely unrelated to each other, would have a much lower chance of producing a puppy with genetic issues stemming from inbreeding, compared to any “purebred” dog. Right? Hybrid vigor? If I have the wrong impression I’d be very curious to know!

7

u/mudlark092 Dec 06 '21 edited Dec 06 '21

I'd be more concerned about behavioral problems.

Active dog breeds get very distressed and destructive when they can not meet their activity needs. Putting it in the body of a dog who is prone to injury from consistent high energy activity is a recipe for disaster. You either get a very bored and restless dog or one with spinal and joint injuries from wanting to run around all the time.

It's not completely inbreeding either, if one parent is prone to a health problem it's still likely to be passed down to the child. Parents can have unrelated health problems and be genetically unrelated, and make a child with both health issues.

Corgis, for example, are prone to hip dysplasia, spinal injury, joint injury, arthritis... All because of their very short legs.

3

u/cardueline Dec 06 '21

Thank you so much, this is a very informative explanation!

4

u/SporkoBug Dec 06 '21

Hybrid Vigor is one thing but when it comes to cross-breeding, (from the Knowledge of my Animal Handling course of... 5-6? years ago), can cause a few problems. There are massive cases of pure breeds having massive problems, due to inbreeding/'pure breeding'.

Husky's have a pretty wonky history in health care and I think Corgi's are one of the few that are kind of okay? Husky's get hip, leg and back problems which when bred with a smaller dog have a chance of just... Messing up? In a way.

Corgi's aren't really a massive breed here where I'm from so we sadly didn't get to talk about them too much, We didn't talk too much about Husky's either but I've done, admittedly little research and know more of the stuff for German Shepards and Border Collies(as they're used as workers here, so they're bred and used a lot here). From what I've heard about and read about Vallhunds is they're pretty healthy themselves too.

It'd be interesting to see the health records for a pup like this honestly, as someone who was infatuated with both Corgi's and Husky's as a kid, and I could easily be proven wrong that breed a tall and a small together makes the joint problems better; but from... I can't say experience but learnt knowledge tells me it's a risky business- Especially since Big dogs live shorter while smaller ones live longer.

But I'd honestly be humble if someone who has more experience than me just comes down and kicks me aside with other facts; this is all just jumble that I know from previous teachings. I have the impression of Hybrid Vigor too, but I feel like it works better for dogs who are more... I don't know, closer in size?

4

u/cardueline Dec 06 '21

OK for sure, the idea of specific crosses being less than ideal definitely makes sense (like I definitely wouldn’t expect a French bulldog/applehead chihuahua mix to have hybrid vigor!) So I can totally see if a breed has joint issues, giving them lil stub legs is not helpful. And yeah I kind of had the same impression that corgis (and vallhunds) are generally actually pretty okay? 🤔 Thank you for discussing, dog breeding can be an understandably touchy subject and I’m worried my questions could come across as being on the wrong side of the issue! (I’m on the side of dogs that are happy and healthy! Lol)

3

u/SporkoBug Dec 06 '21

Its not a problem to answer questions! As I said, someone is more than free to come in and correct me on anything at all, but I'm just remembering what I learnt.

And I'm on the same side as you honestly, responsible breeding; be it pure or cross breeding, is incredibly important no matter what really. Breeders need to know what they're doing and hopefully be doing it for the dogs health rather than money.

I love how the long backs and little legs are such a dominant trait that no matter what you mix a corgi with, you always end up with that. My chocolate lab/corgi mix is literally the ideal dog in every way and he’s so silly. Corgi personality with the intelligence of a lab and the weight/strength of a lab. 80 pound dog with 5 inch long legs and a two foot long back. It almost seems cruel but he’s happy and 13 now with no back or hip problems so thankful for that

It does blow my mind a little that any dog can breed with any other dog, and produce off spring.

So a chihuahua could have puppies with a Great Dane.

Exactly. This poor dog is more than likely going to be plagued with bone and joint issues due to the size difference of the parents.

Honestly I'm not convinced we always need one of these portmanteau words to describe every single cross of two breeds. What's wrong with calling it a Husky x Corgi, or Corgi Cross or Husky Cross (depending on which the dog most resembles?

Although to be clear, I don't actually have a problem with it, just I don't know why we need to always have these types of names for every cross

Where I actually object is when you get to 3 or 4 crosses and still try to give it a combination name, that gets silly. I genuinely saw an advert for a Goldendoodle Shepsky or something to that effect
