Id forgot about that show

106

u/DietDrDoomsdayPreppr 13d ago

It used to be in the anime section at my local Hollywood Video when I was a kid, so literally any child was able to rent it.

57

u/DougFunny_81 13d ago

At least it wasn't Perfect Blue with its brutal as fuck rape scene

60

u/lufan132 13d ago

Perfect blue is legit my favorite movie because nothing else has quite fucked me up in the same way. Felt like the insanity of late Lain compressed into 90 minutes and shit was compelling. Although tbh yeah that scene is intense. Especially the cameras, those were creepy.

22

u/Letharos 13d ago

Lain is top tier though too.

25

u/lufan132 13d ago

Lain is fantastic and easily the greatest show I struggle to recommend because it's slow and boring and the philosophy is what makes it so interesting and good. Best experienced an episode or two a day over the course of about two weeks compared to a lot of more binged anime. That said it's probably one of my favorite series by far because I'm a philosophy nerd and that hit hard with the questions it forced me to answer to attempt to deconstruct the plot and piece the show together. I'd give it a solid 9 or 10 but I can't imagine my girlfriend and anime watching buddies would be one to watch it with me for the second rewatch of mine lol.

9

u/Roam_Hylia 13d ago

It's slow and dry but oh-so interesting. Then the last 3-4 episodes are wild. My buddy and I binged the last half and each of those last episodes ended with a louder "What the fuck!?" than the previous.

A friend of mine spent about 15 years of his life as a swinger with his first wife, did it single for a bit and then his second wife before they decided to get out of it. He said despite having gone all over the country for it, he said that by and large the most people he met doing it were "god fearing" Christian and Conservative. He said it was never more ironic for him when he "played" with a couple once that the couple were complaining about gay marriage being passed and how unnatural and sick it all was and then a half hour later the guy's wife is being tag teamed by my friend and another guy while he watched. He said he could easily name a few prominent Ohio conservative political figures who are part of it all.

Ah — so this whole culture battle stems from their fap-guilt. Makes sense.

1.5k

u/Deyln 13d ago

it's not even fap-guilt sometimes. several "want" to do a thing that's normally done within the hip or vibing side of a job or hustle and they get self-shamed that they don't have the balls to do it themselves.

I mean I got called brave for wearing an awesome neutral grey hoodie that had the zipper on the female side of the zipping mechanism. (as opposed to how alot of gender neutral clothing is male-oriented.)

edit: I hadnt even noticed which side the zipper was on until they pointed it out.

1.3k

u/JimboTCB 13d ago

How the fuck does someone even notice that unless they're constantly watching out for people wearing "wrong" clothes? I'd barely even notice myself if I was wearing it other than wondering why my muscle memory fails me when I try and zip it up.

647

u/gahidus 13d ago

It seems insane that someone would be capable of noticing what side someone else's zipper is on. It's so alien that I can't even get into the mindset of a person who would be deliberately looking for or even passively noticing such things.

I now work for a European company, got sent merch, though they sent me a female jacket until my boss informed me of the former.

257

At least you're stylish enough to have a asymetrical zipper at all. Here I am with my zippers all smack in the middle. :(

edit WAIIIIITT!! I just get it that they were talking about the side where the zipper thingy is when it's open!! I was thinking the entire time that the entire zipper strip would be shifted to the left or the right for some asymetrical design. I'm not only out of fashion but also out of brain. Please downvote into oblivion to make me feel bad about my stupidity.

49

u/Jason_huffman 13d ago

If it makes you feel better I am still not sure what zipper shenanigans they are talking about.

34

u/Anakin_Skywanker 13d ago

Look at a zipper on a jacket you own. The slide part of the zipper stays on either the left or right side of teeth. Right side is traditionally for mens clothing. The left side is for womens clothing.

If you don’t have a zippered jacket handy look at the buttons on a shirt or pants. Mens clothing typically has the button on the right side and the holes on the left. Women’s clothing has it on the reverse.

Most people don’t notice until they wear an article of clothing for the opposite sex and even then they usually just think “weird. This zipper is on the wrong side.” And attribute it to a manufacturer defect.

9

u/Pakman184 13d ago

Is there any practical/historical reason this is done or did someone just wake up one day and decide "This sounds like a fun prank."

13

u/ferret_80 13d ago

I've read that its because wealthy women had servants dress them so because of right hand dominance it is easier for the buttons to be on the left side and go into the right side. But that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me since rich men also had their valet dress them.

61

u/SvenyBoy_YT 13d ago

Can you explain gendered hoodies?

110

u/gahidus 13d ago

Men's clothing has buttons and zippers that are designed to be operated right handed by the person wearing the garment, whereas women's clothing has the buttons and zippers on the opposite side as though they would be operated by a right handed attendant. Men's shirts have the buttons on the right side and the holes on the left side, and women's clothing is oriented in the opposite way.

How someone would actually notice this on someone else's clothing is another matter, but that's how men's and women's fasteners are done.

19

u/zhibr 13d ago

Ok I get the button thing, that's common here too, but what about zippers? In my clothes, the moving thing is on the left (from the wearer's perspective) and the stationary thing that goes into the moving thing is on the right side. I don't think I've ever used clothing that would have it the opposite way. Is this "men's" or "women's"?

8

u/AlexanderTheRemedial 13d ago

That's the exact opposite of zippers, on mens clothes, in the US. The moving part of the zipper is on the right side.

5

u/DevilsTrigonometry 13d ago

What you're describing would be "women's" in the US/Canada.

56

u/squishy_mage 13d ago

Zippers follow the same pattern you'll see on buttoned coats. Men's and women's coats traditionally button on different sides. The left side has the button holes on men's coats with the right having the button holes on women's. Just some arbitrary distinction someone somewhere sometime decided.

98

u/JimboTCB 13d ago

Men traditionally dressed themselves whereas women would have been dressed by a servant, so assuming everyone is right-handed having the buttons the wrong way round for women made it easier. I think women have only been trusted to dress themselves for the last two or three hundred years now, and clothing designers have been cautious to see if this newfangled trend of making clothes practical for the wearer catches on or not.

I actually have a very nice waterproof jacket that turns out to be the 'wrong' gender. It was really cheap since it was a strange size for that gender. Anyway, as nice as it is, I find it a pain to zip because my hands are used to doing it the other way. Before I got it, I hadn't even considered that they had 'sides'.

It should be obvious and easy to do it either way, but it turns out that zippers work better when you put tension in the right places and pull in the right direction, and it matters which side is which. Weird.

→ More replies

11

u/dkwangchuck 13d ago

This is from the evolution of gendered buttons. The buttons on shirts are on different sides for mens and womens shirts. The theory I’ve heard about this is that when buttons first started appearing on clothes, only wealthy people wore them. And at this time, it was more common for men to dress themselves and for women to have a servant assist them. Since the assumption is that everybody is right handed, shirt buttons ended up on different sides of the shirt for those two genders. And this basic principle appears to have carried over to zippers as well.

has to do with buttons and the older tradition of having assistance.

5

u/PeteRaw 13d ago

If you would allow me to elaborate:

Buttons, along with other clothing fasteners, are on the opposite side for females because other women would help dress each other and it was easier for it to be on the left because the woman helping would likely be right handed so it would be on the right side for the person assisting with the dressing.

Bingo. They're just uncomfortable with having to treat people they see as sex objects as actual people instead. And as we all know a republican's discomfort becomes everyone's problem.

269

u/Indercarnive 13d ago Silver

And that's why they say that teaching kids about gay people existing is grooming. Because they see LGBTQ+ solely as sex objects, so therefore in their minds teaching about them is inherently sexual.

76

u/ArthurBonesly 13d ago

You're not wholly wrong, and tapping into a huge reason for the disconnect many anti-lgbtq people have.

To these people gay is a verb, not an attribute. A man can sit around thinking about dicks all day long, but he isn't gay until he does a gay sexual act. They see the normalization of gay people as the normalization of gay sex (and, I mean, they're not entirely wrong in that consenting gay people are probably going to have sex with each other). They see the passive, non sexual things like hand holding and kissing as "grooming" because depicting non-sexual normalization of homosexual romance does normalize leading to more gay kids growing up to have gay sex.

They part they miss, the massive blind spot obvious to anybody who hasn't made haring gayness a cornerstone of their identity, is that only LGBTQ people have mutually consenting LGBTQ sex. You and I understand that you can't make someone gay, it's an attribute one has or does not have regardless their sex life, but for these people it's all "temptation" and "struggle" against doing gay, because to them it's only a problem if they actually have gay sex.

42

u/cantadmittoposting 13d ago

I think there's an underlying point here which... Doesn't obviate the science... But is an interesting sidenote.

It probably is true that as homosexuality becomes more acceptable, and especially as the idea of "nonbinary" and "sexuality as a spectrum" becomes widely accepted, we will see much more same sex relationships than we did before... Not because people are being groomed to be gay/bi/experimental, but because the end of repression allows more freedom of expression that already existed but was avoided.

So more kids might grow up to eventually have gay sex... But only in the same way one might say more people grew up to have interracial marriages when that was legalized and the stigma began receding.

You can track the cultural wars they create specifically with pieces of legislation.

Do you know what happened March 7th 2021? The incredibly popular " American rescue plan act" was passed.

Fox News successfully distracted their audience with cancel culture and gender of fictional characters, and the second the legislation left the normal media atmosphere, they turn off the hose of propaganda.

Fox News is like Netflix, they cancel half their storylines in season 2 because they're no longer profitable. None of those pretend issues were ever 'solved'

I mean, I know plenty of LGBT people who are conservatives. It blows my mind each time I meet one.

It's like some unstable element looking for its own destruction in that case imo. Like do they realize the other conservatives would rather burn them than accept them?

How anyone LGBTQ+ can support conservatives blows my mind.

u/[deleted] 13d ago

Reminds me of a conservative pornstar who was a rampant Trump supporter. The comments were the most amusing part. Most of them were basically some violent nasty shit ending with "but I still jerk off to your videos "

When you call out the hypocrisy, their reply is BUT PORN IS ADDICTIVE. Umm, what happened to the "personal responsibility" spiel? Or is that only for minorities?

exactly, that's why they accuse the community of sexualizing children who discover their identities early because they're sexualizing us

80

u/Hiimmani 13d ago

So thats why they think drag queens shouldnt read to kids. These sick fucks think this is all just some ellaborate fetish, because all they know about trans and drag people is from pronhub?

45

u/Patrickk_Batmann 13d ago

Yes. Every time a Republican hates something, you can just assume they are projecting their own fucked up self onto that thing they hate.

Ahhhhh~ So thats why they call everyone they dislike Groomers and pedophiles.

All the projection contained so obviously in their “trans and gay people are grooming children” current panic of the year.

  1. They’re grooming children.

  2. They fetishize and dehumanize the LGBTQ.

They’re telling on themselves. I’ve met so many older Republican men whose only definition of lesbian is a sex object or a threesome counterpart. It’s gross. And their comments about women are always demeaning and hinges on that woman’s attractiveness or sexuality.

65

u/LearnedHowToDougie 13d ago

Also, it's a bigger part of their life because they are seeing it regularly. For the rest of us, trans people make up less than 1% of the population. If your an asshole that is offended for some reason - How hard is it to look the other way?

They were obsessed with gay porn too.

Consider how much they talk about pedophilia as well. If this was ALL projection...

u/Jackpot777 13d ago Silver Helpful Wholesome All-Seeing Upvote

There is legitimate science behind the gay-bashing = in the closet and excited by gay porn stuff.

There's a medical device that can measure when a man's ...well, manhood... was swelling with blood. Take one of those and subject volunteers to certain stimulating situations (say, some good ol' fashioned pr0n) to see what excited them. And make sure you get a good broad spectrum of where they stand politically, so you know whether there's a connection between vocally hating gayness and secretly having the gayness and such as, or not.

The scientific name for such a device is a plethysmograph. And there is indeed a penile plethysmograph used in medicine...

I'll cut to the chase: yes. It looks like they angry cos they horny.

The authors investigated the role of homosexual arousal in exclusively heterosexual men who admitted negative affect toward homosexual individuals. Participants consisted of a group of homophobic men (n = 35) and a group of nonhomophobic men (n = 29); they were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia (W. W. Hudson & W. A. Ricketts, 1980).

The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored.

We have the technology...

A mercury-in-rubber (MIR) circumferential strain gauge (Bancroft, Jones, & Pullan, 1966) was used to measure erectile responses to the sexual stimuli. When attached, changes in the circumference of the penis caused changes in the electrical resistance of the mercury column, which were detected by a Parks Model 270 Plethysmograph (pre-amplifier; Parks Electronic Laboratory, Beaverton, OR). The pre-amplifier output was channeled into a Grass polygraph. Tumescence responses were recorded on the chart drive of the polygraph and were channeled to an analog-to-digital (A-to-D) interface connected to an IBM computer.

And yes, they covered the bases with what got the men going.

The stimuli were 4-min segments of explicit erotic videotapes depicting consensual adult heterosexual activity, consensual male homosexual activity, and consensual female homosexual activity. The sexual activity in the videos included sexual foreplay (e.g., kissing and undressing), oral-genital contact ( e.g., fellatio or cunnilingus), and intercourse (i.e., vaginal penetration, anal penetration, or tribadism in the lesbian film). The lesbian videotape was included because it has been shown to be highly sexually arousing to heterosexual men and is a better discriminator between heterosexual and homosexual men than other stimuli (Mavissikalian, Blanchard, Abel, & Baflow, 1975 ).

What you're looking at is the three graphs, each with two lines on them. Three graphs for the three types of video, two different types of line for the homophobic and nonhomophobic groups.

Figure 1. Stimulus presentations by groups across time blocks. The only significant difference between groups is with the homosexual video. The blocked line represents the nonhomophobic group; the solid line represents the homophobic group. Top: Heterosexual video; middle: lesbian video; bottom: homosexual video.

Results?

The results of this study indicate that individuals who score in the homophobic range and admit negative affect toward homosexuality demonstrate significant sexual arousal to male homosexual erotic stimuli. These individuals were selected on the basis of their report of having only heterosexual arousal and experiences.

The homophobes got a rise (pun specifically intended) from the gay porn: "significant sexual arousal to male homosexual erotic stimuli".

TL;DR - to paraphrase Shakespeare, methinks the gay-bashers doth protest TOO much...

They used this device on Rock of Love. Strapped it to Bret Michaels and had the ladies talk dirty to him. If i remember correctly a guy in a lab coat with a clipboard would look at results, turn to producers and give a thumbs up

u/pedantic_cheesewheel 13d ago

It seems to me so much of that is a result of long term bi erasure in so much of the world. From my experience there’s a metric fuckton of people walking around that are bisexual and feel they cannot be open about it. Even in more tolerant communities. Repression of self in these Republican heavy areas would certainly lead to that subsection of the population seeking exploration through porn. The worst of them would seek to repress what they would see as only gay impulses by overcompensating. The amount of people I’ve met in my life that literally don’t think bisexual orientation is a real thing astonishes me. This is anecdotal but my experiences line up with studies like this where the majority of them were aroused by it all but have self proclaimed negative attitudes toward homosexuals.

54

u/bigtoebrah 13d ago

I didn't tell anyone I was bi until my twenties. I was drunk and I cried because I thought no one would like me anymore lol

42

u/FiveOhFive91 13d ago

Friend of mine came out to me as bi while we were tripping. He's in his mid 30s and it was the first time he'd told anyone. He was terrified I wouldn't be his friend anymore and that I'd out him to his family. Poor guy. Sucks to have to hide it.

85

u/P_weezey951 13d ago edited 13d ago

As a bisexual.

Its fucking wild the number of stipulations people put on why/how/who im attracted too. "I think your just gay or confused"

Were so fucking obsessed with division of sides. "Do you like coke or pepsi?" Bitch they are both delicious! Theyre sugary sweet drinks! How is it so hard to comprehend that people can like both?

"But what about Dr. Pepper?" MF. YES. i like it too!

People focus so heavy on the OR. Not the And.

But like, most people actually do like coke and pepsi. Its not like they go to the restaurant and get all pissed if someone offers them pepsi. Not really. Most people tend to take whichever cola they have. So the concept isn't that farfetched

37

u/fzero127 13d ago

My wife was told that she is not bi because she married a guy. That's not how it works. Somehow, I am also bi, according to them. Even though I am not attracted to men.

17

u/HotterRod 13d ago

Yes, the study found that homophobic men were aroused by both lesbian and gay sex scenes, which suggests that they were closeted bi rather than closeted gay.

35

u/voodoomoocow 13d ago

Well I always assumed people who think you can just "choose" to be straight are outing themselves as bisexuals. Since anything other than heteronormative feelings are not discussed in conservative circles, then these bisexual feelings are something they consciously chose to disregard and can't fathom why gay people won't do the same except to be provocative.

u/Salty_Paroxysm 13d ago

This is where the "it's a choice to be gay" cones from, they feel that they can't acknowledge those feelings, so 'choose' to suppress them. There's a whole discussion to be had regarding why they feel they have to suppress those feelings. The outcome seems to be disgust for those people who have 'chosen' to be gay i.e. acknowledged their feelings/desires as a part of who they are.

10

u/TEG_SAR 13d ago

Which is wild because it should just give a rise of validity to bisexuals or other sexual orientations.

But no, we instead choose to stuff the feelings down so far till they’re bitter and full of hate 🙄 /s

u/andbruno 13d ago

tribadism

TIL scissoring has a legitimate term.

15

u/CocaTrooper42 13d ago

I learned this after watching a Bo Burnham special and googling “peanut butter tribadism”

8

u/PaulsRedditUsername 13d ago

Apparently from tribade, 16th-century French for lesbian. From the Latin and Greek tribas or tribien, meaning "to rub, rub down, wear away." The name for the specific sexual technique doesn't appear until 1965. (Source Online Etymology Dictionary)

Neither! Tried the website from aus (city life isn't even slightly homophobic (at least in Fitzroy)) and it was blocked? Looked up "is lawsuit a legitimate website" and obviously got nowhere. Can I get linked to the study source

22

u/[deleted] 13d ago

They've published the dataset they're using on Tableau at least; it seems to be generated off of hourly Google trends data, using the Public Religion Research Institute for their definitions on left v. right.

It does look like the website linked (and getting hugged to death) is just an activist site, not any source of news.

Clearly no one actually read the thing because there's no way to draw this conclusion from this data. Shit like this is why I'm losing trust in the objectivity of science.
