feel like it wouldn't be hard telling a 23 yr old black dude from a 49 yr old white guy - but then again i haven't had police training

You would be rejected for being too smart.

You're probably overqualified if you think this mistake shouldn't have happened.

From posted sauce: "Neal Brown, who was described in the warrant as a Caucasian male with brown hair, blue eyes, and a bushy white beard..."

"His attorney accuses officers of failing to perform "any due diligence" in the lawsuit, noting that an existing mug shot belonging to the white "Shane Brown" would have allowed them to "easily" determine that his client had been misidentified."

(emphasis mine)

WTF no kan reed pikchurz? O.o

If the police are doing this, consider a hiring manager using Google or one of those low quality public information sites to weed out applicants, it’s scary to think how many people could be missing out on opportunities because of their name

u/rugbat Jan 22 '22

There are many more who miss out on opportunities because of the colour of their skin. On the flip side, there are plenty of employers who miss opportunities because of their own prejudice.

Just names. In this particular matter unconventional names -- e.g. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wwFsxogUFVc -- are advantageous.

Well one of them looks guilty of something.

-the police probably.

I am glad Nevada is progressive enough to hire people who are obviously legally blind as police officers.

I hope he wins the lawsuit.

The lawyer representing the plaintiff has cunningly sued for a low figure; 100% it will be a quick settlement and the lawyer walks away with 35-40% with minimal effort.

Tell is it’s America without telling us it’s America

12

u/TOVE892 Jan 22 '22

...The very first word in the title is a USA state.

Wasn't really necessary though

2

u/255001434 Jan 22 '22

Yeah, because injustice and oppression never happen anywhere else. /s

3

u/Western_Resort Jan 22 '22

They don’t deny it though.

6

u/guestpass127 Jan 22 '22

If America is just as unjust and oppressive as nations who are unjust and oppressive then it should stop selling itself as a bastion of justice and freedom

1

u/255001434 Jan 23 '22

I didn't say it was "just as" anything, and I'm not about to try to evaluate where it falls on the scale of those things compared to other nations. That wasn't the point.

The commenter I replied to implied that it must be America since this had happened, as if wrongful imprisonment isn't common in other places. It was a dumb thing to say.

I take it back, maybe the russians should nuke Nevada

6

u/mala27369 Jan 22 '22

They look so much alike it's no wonder blind deaf and dumb cops have so much trouble telling them apart.

2

u/saulverde Jan 22 '22

At 19 I almost went to jail because a man in his 50s with the same name was passing bad checks in my home town.

Live in the US.

The words are Systemic Racism! Let’s all take a knee, or have a non-violent rally, or some other non-violent way of protesting against SYSTEMIC RACISM! Sigh, so ashamed of this country.
