Weber Grills under fire for poorly timed meatloaf recipe

u/death_by_chocolate Jan 22 '22
They're under fire? That's even worse than the meatloaf recipe. That's a double debuff I'm afraid.

The latest rage in “journalism” is to cite like 5 random tweets as evidence of the latest wave of outrage over whatever dumbass thing

Oh ffs, people are upset about this?
It's a goddamn recipe. If you can't separate food from someone named after food, that's a you problem.
30
u/MillionEgg Jan 22 '22
No one was upset, people made fun of them.
14
u/ety3rd Jan 22 '22
And, by apologizing, Weber gets some PR from it and people asking to see the recipe.
1
u/44problems Jan 23 '22
Wait, can you grill meatloaf? How's that work. Crap they're getting me to look up this recipe aren't they
17
u/questionfear Jan 22 '22
God this is what I get for just reading the headline, I read it as though they had put out a recipe with shit timing, like “cook 4lbs of meat for 15 minutes”.

He’s laughing his ass if at this.
45
u/Marshall_Lawson Jan 22 '22
Didn't they have a scene in Rocky Horror where they ate him at a dinner party? His character in the movie wasn't named Meatloaf, but like everyone knew that was the joke
Edit: Yes, i remembered this right. Sorry not sorry for spoilers about a side joke in a 50 year old movie

u/dewayneestes Jan 22 '22
Meatloaf would have loved to know this is how he’s being memorialized. You don’t choose the name “meatloaf” as a stage name if you don’t love eating a good meatloaf.
3
u/OlympiaShannon Jan 23 '22
It was a childhood nickname from his father, not a stage name, for what it's worth. :)
9
u/Actual__Wizard Jan 22 '22
Yes. People need to give them some slack. All of these companies use a content calendar. This recipe was probably planned out 2+ months in advance and just happened to have it's publish date set to one that randomly happened to fall on that day.

Probably they are the same people that must be warned to don't put a pet in a microwave to dry it.

It depends by the pet you put in. Was it a guinea pig or a hamster? You need to set the time based on the size of the pet. Check the instructions here

Uhm, do you know the weight? I would use it and compare with the instructions given by the producer of the microwave. Mine came with a double scale, type of pet and weight, so when the animal is not on the scale I can use the weight.

I really hope this is sarcasm
38
u/u338pwia Jan 22 '22
It was a marketing decision made weeks ago for people who subscribe to one of their weekly newsletters with recipes. Just so happens to be very coincidental, unfortunate for the Weber company. Now getting flack for sending it, and also for apologizing for something they did inadvertently.
19
u/Mr3Jays Jan 22 '22
Yea, that’s why I said I hope it’s sarcasm. That’s like People Magazine and Betty White. This stuff takes time and planning, so there’s no need to apologize for releasing it and then a celebrity dies. No one can to edit these things.

u/count023 Jan 22 '22
No point trying to argue common sense, to Timmy Twitch-Stream or that Karyns' collective in chucklefuck, Kentucky, these decisions are made immediately and based off what happened that very morning. So you should get very angry about it the moment it happens and not think it through with any rational though. Hit that hornet's nest as hard as you can and squeal like a piggie until someone placates you.

u/CandylandCanada Jan 22 '22
Just announced: Hershey’s released a recipe on the day that Gene Wilder died! Tootsie Pop disrespected Shirley Temple by failing to halt production when she died! Werther’s didn’t hang flags at half-mast for Sam Davis, Jr.! If you don’t know any of those people, they were connected to candy in the public consciousness, the first and the third about as long ago as Meatloaf was relevant.

I assumed this meant it told you to undercook a meatloaf...
Does anyone think Meatloaf took his namesake that seriously?

Calm down, people; it was clearly unintentional. Go direct your unwarranted rage toward something that will make a difference in the world. Do better, not just louder.

This better be one hell of a Meatloaf recipe.

INGREDIENTS
1 1⁄4 lbs ground beef 1 1⁄4 lbs ground pork 2 cups breadcrumbs 1 cup onion, chopped fine 1 large egg 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon dried tarragon 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1⁄2 cup barbecue sauce 1⁄4 cup ketchup
DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl using your hands, add ground beef, pork, bread crumbs, onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, tarragon, salt and pepper. Mix very well. Divide into two loafs about 4x7 on to a baking sheet. Prepare the grill for indirect heat medium to medium low, about 300. In a small bowl mix the ketchup and barbecue sauce. Top each meat loaf with 3 tablespoons all over the meatloaf. Reserve the remaining sauce for later. Making sure your grill is clean, slide the meatloaf gently onto the grate where there is indirect heat so there are no flare up's. Cook until the interior meat temperature is 160°, this will take around 50-60 minutes. Let them cool on the grill about 10-15 minutes. Then add the remaining sauce equally on each loaf. Remove and cut into 1/2 inch slices. To make meat loaf sandwiches, cut into 1/2 inch slices slather with sauce on both sides with reserved barbecued sauce over medium low heat for 4-6 minutes, turning once. Temp should be between 250-300. Serve on sourdough bread with provolone cheese and more sauce if desired.

BBQ don't care about a fallen rock star. Music trends fade. Hunger doesn't.

u/ReadontheCrapper Jan 22 '22
A friend of mine got both of the emails from Weber. Our reaction when she shared it was that amused horror - mild shock, some laughter, and many comments on the unfortunate timing.
When they planned their marketing strategy out weeks or months ago - what’d be the odd of that happening?!

who cooks meatloaf on a grill

People who cook meatloaf on a grill cook meatloaf on a grill, that's why they are cooking meatloaf on a grill.

I came here thinking that “poorly timed” meant the recipe didn’t have you cook the meatloaf long enough and include safe internal temperature.
I completely overlooked the coincidence here.

Not even going to click the link for Verve. They've never made an article that is worth reading. I have as much fact to back me up on that they do for their drama pieces.

We are not going to eliminate a whole food group (loafs) just because some dumb ass ( red is my hero) was not vaccinated and died Give him a Darwin award and get cooking!!
2
u/Emperor_TaterTot Jan 22 '22
Somehow my wife of 14 years made meatloaf for the first time the same day Meat Loaf died. Weird coincidence especially since she plans meals out about a week in advance.

The sort of person who gets offended by something like this is the sort of person who is responsible for most of the wrong with the world

u/synthaetica Jan 22 '22
Weber Grills has found paradise under the dashboard lights for a poorly timed meatloaf recipe. They’re now searching like a bat out of hell for an excuse. Their social media accounts have offered public apologies, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Public outcry remains sharp because heaven can wait. No one knows why they did it; we’re all left in the dark.

Who cares? Just the perpetually offended.
Normal people will think it humorous at the timing and then move on.

u/BlooperHero Jan 22 '22
Probably the people who are perpetually offended by the existence of people they imagine are perpetually offended.

…..… while the rest will rail against a perceived injustice (it isn’t) perpetrated on a singer (of whose songs they likely can’t name more than three) who was in a movie that came out before the were born (which the only know from theme nights at the local cinema). The best part? If they had bothered to spend the five minutes that the spent throwing a tantrum over this non-story, then they may have found that they didn’t care for his politics in the least.

u/BlooperHero Jan 22 '22
Look at you, railing against your perceived injustice.
Maybe you should calm down. If you'd've spent five minutes reading the other comments--
Okay, I'm done.

I LOVE my Weber…and equally my meatloaf. Is it time to sail west in search of a new life?

Listen, there’s a non zero number of people who happened to be having meatloaf the day Meatloaf died, maybe even as they found out, how do you think they feel?!

u/bakepeace Jan 23 '22
Though it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night, I can see my meatloaf by the grill hood light!

Why? It’s not like they milked making one grill for forty years and then died from a preventable virus.

I dunno. This is right up there with Coke 2 in terms of corporate disasters. I expect the Weber CEO to commit seppuku in front of the board.

The fucking comments here. No one was offended, people just made jokes about it on Twitter. Stop making up offended straw men to justify your own rage.
