I mean.. one of the biggest things they marketed was the fact that you can customize genitalia, and the game had full nudity, yet they did absolutely nothing with it. Beyond the character creation scene, it meant dick all. It was a simply a ploy to drum up attention for the game. Now that people are doing something with it, they bitch? What is wrong with this company...

There is some really bizzaire censorship in Cyberpunk. In Japanese copies, many ads are "glitched" to obscure drugs, alcohol, or sexual things. Copies from the Middle East do not allow you to customize genitals at all, and sex scenes are removed.

Well the celebrities must have also realised this was going to happen. The laws on using people's likenesses are a bit fuzzy, but there's almost certainly nothing in them Reeves could use in this situation anyway, even assuming he wanted to.

If it's not in their contract of what their image can be used for they [the celebrity] can sure the company for allowing it to happen. Which is why cdpr had to do something. They lost the "we didn't know about it" defence when the article was published. if you want to blame anyone for this going away it was whoever wrote that article.

I doubt Reeves cares nearly as much about this as his agent. If including celebrity likenesses in games means inevitably getting turned into a sex mod, followed by a “what did you expect??” from the gaming community, then I’m sure agencies will be a lot less willing to sell talent.

Those 'sex scenes' were incredibly tame, and gender is basically irrelevant for all you see. Running around naked also has zero impact, except _maybe_ a very occasional comment when you speak to a 'nameless' NPC (they say something that may or may not be related to it; I dont know if its a normal line). You can't even run around fully naked, since you have underwear on even with it turned off.
Its not a sex sim as you say, and nobody but the horniest of nerds wants that, but nudity is a part of life, and for them to build a world that heavily revolves around sex, to have no nudity detracts from the overall realism of the game. Lets say they took Schindler's List, and put giant, comical black bars over all the nudity.. would the movie have the same impact?

Our most important rule regarding user-generated content, game mods in particular, is that it can’t be harmful towards others. In the case of model swaps, especially those that involve explicit situations, it can be perceived as such by the people who lent us their appearance for the purpose of creating characters in Cyberpunk 2077. Therefore, when making fan content, creators have to make sure they’ve got permission from all the concerned parties (which might be people other than CD PROJEKT RED). For the characters we’ve invented for the game, we broadly permit you to tweak the game at will and just have fun. When it comes to models of real people whom we’ve asked to participate in the game, we kindly ask you to refrain from using them in any situation that might be found offensive if you don’t have their explicit permission.
They have a point though. This feels like an issue of consent. I have to imagine that developers and publishers will be less willing to provide for their community if it's going to be a problem. It has the feel of like, shitting in your friend's borrowed guitar.

Keanu Reeves could, at any time, say it doesn't bother him and CD would be in the clear. Until he does we can safely assume he would prefer his likeness not be used explicitly. CD has two options, either fight it how they are or roll over and just let it happen. I think Reeves, and all video game participants, deserve to have the developer fight this battle for them.

Fighting against these sex mods is likely to just encourage people to make even more of them. Likely taking the model from Cyberpunk and putting it into other games or source filmmaker porn.
Still, you just know that anyone thinking of including the likeness of a real person in their game will make sure to include a "let modders be modders" clause in the contract. Just so the developers don't have to step into another fight like this.

The point is CYA. They are doing everything in their power to make this illegal, and as such anyone that makes an illegal mod for their game is not getting support of CDPR so they can't be sued for the damage that mod does.

Granted. This reddit post is the first I'm hearing of it. Though I have no significant interest in Cyberpunk. As you said, accepting the initial wave so as not to risk a Streisand effect would be a decision for the offended individuals when the developer asks.

(Minor spoilers ahead). The game is about Reeves being a digital construct riding alongside in the protagonist's body. There are even scenes where Reeves takes over and engages in drinking, drug use and flirting with a woman he intends to take home with him. Also any sex the character has in the game basically also means that this other person has sex with Reeves who sees what is happening and potentially can comment on things.
Additionally there is a character creator in the game. And there are obviously people who created characters resembling Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg or Adolf Hitler. Heck there are guides how to create character resembling Keanu Reeves in the tool - of course some people for instance created Neo like character as it is definitely in line with the cyberpunk theme. So then any sex scene is a scene with famous person.
Shit like that happened from time immemorial in every game that provides players with character creation tools. This is all just storm in teapot to ramp up publicity.

Not to mention the regularity of this in most games nowadays given character modeling techniques and motion capture. People clutching their pearls over this are only doing it for Keanu. Faces and likeness have been getting scanned into games for a long, long time now.

Just because it happens in other games and with deepfakes, doesn't make it right. It's more that it's difficult to regulate is why people still do it.
Celebrities don't find it charming or appreciate their likeness being used this way.
Gamers saying that they paid for the game giving them the right is a sad excuse of a reason to subject these people to this.

I’m not saying it’s right or wrong or going one way or another on it, just pointing out that the reception seems to be different on this because it’s a well known celebrity.
I think this came up recently with the model for Jill in RE3, Sasha Zatova, and she pretty much said she didn’t mind. I just don’t see that having gained any traction if she ended up on the other side of it and wasn’t comfortable.

It's okay if someone is fine with it, lucky in her case she was, but you can't do something and then ask for consent later, that's not how that works.
It's not sensitive to the person modding to not be able to do this to the character as it is for the actor to be subjected to it without consenting first, and that's why I can't understand why so many people are getting upset about CDPR telling them not to

Yeah, this seems dangerously close to the ethical issue of making deepfake porn of people without consent.
It's different if it's a random npc, but having a character specifically designed to look like a real person so you can do stuff to them (sexually, violently) can be dangerous and especially disturbing for the person.
Keanu may say he's chill with it, but this is NOT something where you can ask for forgiveness instead of permission.

They actually do have a point. Reading between the lines of the press release it sounds like Keanu has a lot of restrictions on the use of his image in the contract licensing that image. This particular mod probably runs afoul of those restrictions and puts CDPR in hot water. I dont have the copy of the game, but it would be interesting to search the end user agreement and see what it has in it about models using licensed images. If those restrictions on use are passed along in the EULA then the mod makers are in violation of the agreement for using the game resources. That makes it more like shitting in your friends digital guitar that you weren't supposed to take off the wall. And that is before you do get to the really thorny issue of digital consent.
Of course it wouldnt suprise me in CDPR forgot to write that into the ELUA just like they forgot to program a real game.

Ok so it's a mod. I thought it was built into the game.. like how you gonna ask people to not do something you put in your game. But it makes more sense now since it's not a "fake" person but actually the likeness of a real person can't say it wasn't obvious this would happen tho.
