The legal defenses of these people seems like it was crafted by lawyers who want them to get convicted.

109

u/karrachr000 Jan 14 '21

Legal Eagle (a prominent Lawyer who makes videos for Youtube) posted a video of him reacting to the lawyer of the terrorist who stole Pelosi's Lectern.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rVsRmcE-u8

51

u/sybrwookie Jan 14 '21

I loved that one. "Why are you admitting that????" "YOU CAN SAY 'NO COMMENT'!!!"

34

u/karrachr000 Jan 14 '21

He seems to be doing really well with these new <60 second videos; quick, to the point, and easily digestible.

45

u/sybrwookie Jan 14 '21

I just wish he would have called them Legal Briefs. The name was perfect.

8

u/Whereistashmyporn Jan 14 '21

His long form stuff is fantastic though. If people like his tiktoks and actually want to learn digestible legal topics, check out his YouTube for sure.

They might try the Shaggy defense after all of this – "It wasn't me!"

16

u/karrachr000 Jan 14 '21

Hard to do that after your lawyer goes on TV and tells people that definitely was you.

32

u/Brndrll Jan 14 '21

"They photographed you in the building."

"Wasn't me!"

"You were carrying a lectern."

"Wasn't me!"

"It was all over Facebook."

"Wasn't me!"

"You were even live streaming."

39

u/ooru Jan 14 '21

Trumpers broke in and they caught me red-handed

Stealing from the Senate floor

Picture this, we were all trespassing

Bangin' on Pelosi's door

How could I forget that this was

Broadcast on the TV

All the cops, they were standing there

And letting us roam freely

I loved Bills older stand ups but the last one I saw started with some extremely distasteful, misogynistic rant. I just exited out.

Edit: turned into a huge argument here. Lots of people are gatekeeping for Bill saying that’s his style. I’m well aware. Watched plenty of his stuff and I STILL love the guys comedy. I’m not calling for boycott or saying he’s lost his touch. Just this particular bit didn’t strike me as funny enough to make up for the insulting vibe he goes for. I am going to rewatch the special because he apparently turns this bit into a thoughtful and meaningful point at the end of the show. Y’all need to take advice from your apparent hero and “let it go”

11

u/Serenikill Jan 14 '21

The "cancel culture backlash" was the worst thing to happen to standup. It's like every comedian felt the need to whine about cancel culture or have a bit that proved they were immune. All they proved is it was never as big of a thing as they were making it out to be.

u/mces97 Jan 14 '21

Speaking of his old stand up, I was reminded of the clip the other day and I think it's the perfect metaphor for what's going on right now.

Bill Burr is social media, real fake news, and his dog are the viewers, users just getting amped up and feeding off the hosts lies and anger.

https://youtu.be/4sUEaATniCo

104

u/RohhkinRohhla Jan 14 '21

Not exactly sure what you mean by real fake news but after rewatching that clip, yes I agree. Perfect comparison. Social media/news media amp people up and they just attack without even understanding why.

70

u/smokingcatnip Jan 14 '21

Social media has created a culture of reaction rather than contemplation.

The more instantaneous things get, the worse it gets.

I realize that makes me sound like a boomer, and I regret that, but I still stand by my hypothesis.

37

u/herrbz Jan 14 '21

I see it a lot. "Vegans OUTRAGED by KFC burger" - their source for the "outrage"? One tweet they found underneath a KFC post.

This then leads to 1000s of people commenting and sharing, all shouting about how awful and annoying vegans are. None have read the article.

Swap "vegan" with any group of people, rinse and repeat.

24

u/ShivanMarauder Jan 14 '21

Reaction culture has always been there though. The Red Scare with McCarthy post-WW2 wasn't an act of contemplation, it was pure reaction. Like the Cultural Revolution in China. Like the mainstream news post-9/11, with roots going back to Watergate. It's rare that they commit to a deep dive news piece, it's almost all reaction with a thin veneer of analysis.

Bill does something so simple in that interview that I've yet to hear a single journalist ask Trump...

When Trump goes into his whole "you know, they say my speech was perfect", "they say my call was perfect."

And not one reporter asks what Bill Burr asks that interviewer..

"Who did?"

I've been waiting 4 years for just one person to call Trump out on it, but no, haven't heard it yet.

u/Roflkopt3r Jan 14 '21 Gold

Famously the German political elite thought that Hitler was just some fleeting occurance they could appease for a while. A few months later they had handed him dictatorial power in exchange for some minor political concessions.

Meanwhile many German citizens claim to have thought all this talk about going to war and committing genocide was just exaggeration.

A key lesson from that time is to take people seriously when they announce crimes and atrocities, and threaten democracy. A few more corrupt judges, a little more radicalisation amongst the police, and Democracy may not survive the next time.

Because they've been brainwashed for so many generations with politically correct, obfuscated, excuses that they've lost all connection with reality. They think that being racist is perfectly reasonable, moral, and biblical and all the objections are just bad faith attempts to pull one over on them.

I lived it til college. The people at the top are largely aware and genuinely malicious. Some people are just ignorant and very deeply immersed in the lie. I've developed a disdain for "faith" because the same blind following required for religion seems to lead people to refuse economic and social realities too.

And they make me wear pants in public too. It's a slippery slope. Where will the oppression end!?

To be fair, they are taking away the rights of LGBTQ+ folks.

The people who’s rights are being taken away are women, racial minorities’, and LGBT people. She’s not wrong, but she’s right for the completely wrong reason.

She's obviously a bigoted moron, but we shouldn't overlook the toll that COVID has played and the real impact it has had on all Americans, especially the lower and middle class. Many of us know small business owners that have had to close up shop or have seen their life savings washed away trying to stay afloat. Many of us know friends or family that have been laid off or have seen their growing careers come to a sudden end. It's easy to tell them that this was all for the greater good, but it still doesn't provide them a personalized reason why they were "singled out" for being the economic sacrifice.

For example, in the city I live in, night clubs have found loopholes to stay open but small breweries have shuttered. Tattoo parlors are still closed even though they are some of the most hygienic businesses. Some restaurants complied with the rules while others, it turned out, did not and have not gotten any penalty.

The best thing you can do is tell them that their sacrifice kept the death toll 10-times lower than it likely would be if everyone did whatever they want... but it doesn't change the fact that some people and some businesses have been doing whatever they want since the beginning.

45

u/BlooperHero Jan 14 '21

That's really the fault of the lack of any national response.

5

u/drmcsinister Jan 14 '21

It was a shocking failure from the President on down. Local leaders had a mix of success, depending on where you lived.

This is true, and it’s not at all fair or ok. But at the same time, wearing a mask or staying 6 feet apart doesn’t hurt anyone and if people would do it we might get through this faster and better. And now this whole movement against getting the vaccine is just one more way a ton of people are refusing to do anything to make things better. I don’t know the stats, but anecdotally, the people I’ve talked to in my area who are rightfully mad about losing jobs or hours and being asked to stay home are the same ones refusing to take any of the recommended precautions and it’s hard to feel too bad when they won’t even do the simplest things.

23

u/xnfd Jan 14 '21

The context is about a restaurant being forced to close because indoor dining is banned. Other countries recognize this is a hardship for businesses and give them ongoing subsidies while they're closed.

9

u/we11_actually Jan 14 '21

Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. Our government didn’t do its job in supporting people who lost jobs or hours or had to close their businesses. But people also have a responsibility to do what they can to help end or slow the spread of the virus so that we can eventually get back to having things open and working. Like, it’s obviously a terrible hardship to have everything closed, but it’s going to be a terrible hardship whether or not you act like a selfish jerk and refuse to mask. Except taking precautions would allow everything to open up sooner and lessen the hardships.

This doesn't have anything to do with rights, there's a public health crisis. The lower and middle class shouldering the economic fallout of the crisis is because of the flaccid and wholly inadequate response of the Trump administration and the Republican controlled senate, who repeatedly blocked legislation that would have provided some measure of relief to those businesses and families.

Privileged morons think they're being denied their rights because they're inconvenienced and forced to think about the wellbeing of someone other than themselves. Any smoothbrained dipshit who cried about "muh freedom" during this whole ordeal deserves to be thrown in the gulag, this lady included.

That's not to mention the hypocrisy apparent in wrongly crying about ones rights being infringed upon, while ones political party of choice helmed by an orange demagogue did a putsch to attempt to literally deny the rights of millions of people.

She did this to protest COVID restrictions. Which pisses me off. I seriously am tired of people equating their favorite coffee shop having their dining room closed and having to wear a mask inside Walmart to actual fucking genocide.

I'm tired of my favorite coffee shop having their dining room closed and having to wear a mask inside Walmart, which is why I try to avoid spreading COVID-19 so those things can stop sooner!

But when you think about in Nazi Germany, in Cuba, with Mussolini it starts the same way. They come for your business, your religion, your property and then for you,

False. It started with Hitler being elected. Without that, none of the other things would have happened. That's what these people never understand. They think first comes the oppression and then Hitler gets into power. But that's the opposite of how it happens.
