Credit for those who don't know: This is Ancient Dragon, designed by Satoshi Kamiya of Japan. He is well-known for his super-complex and frequently fantasy-related designs.

133

u/TavorX 13d ago

He remains my most favorite origami artist. Robert Lang is fantastic too! But Kamiya's designs are so... Beyond realism, woven into every fold and yields some real eye candy! When I was younger, when I was really obsessed with origami, I made various attempts to tackle his origami but they were very difficult to follow.

It is my dream goal to fold his "Phoenix 3.5" at some point in my life. I haven't done this hobby in such a long time, but I do reflect back and wonder as an adult if it would be any easier to revisit his stuff again, like the Ancient Dragon. OP, I commend you on a job well done, as you're right, those that have tried, know how tedious and frustrating the process is. But when complete, it's soooo satisfying!

91

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

Thank you!! By the way, there are certain tutorials/helps for his Phoenix, also plenty of discord servers with people to help you out. Heck, I can help you if you really want/need some help! The model is tricky for sure!

34

u/ZyTech 13d ago

There's discord servers for Origami? I will happily ask for an invite lol.

27

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

Of course hahaha, imma pm you

13

u/Aizen_Myo 13d ago

Can I have one too? Got interested during corona and picked it up recently again :)

6

u/grilledcakes 13d ago

Oh cool. Could I get an invite as well please? Was there any wet folding on this model? It looks great by the way.

I’m pretty sure I saw the video with that dragon in it, same color and all

Quite impressive seeing as I need a few pieces of tape to finish a simple shape

Marvin, can you please bring up SCP 1762? /u/The-Paranoid-Android

Edit: For anyone not going to read the article, here's an exceptional reading of it on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJW5b-sBx1k

This is one of the rare ones that’ll have you chopping onions

4

u/MoreNMoreLikelyTrans 13d ago

This SCP will make you cry. So will, in my opinion, SCP 6001. But only once you understand the scope and themes of the SCP universe.

It's healthy to cry.

It's unhealthy not to.

Wales has entered the chat.

41

u/FrenchBoguett 13d ago

I'd love to visit Wales someday. Hope I'll see dragons everywhere, I can't wait to ride one from the airport to my hotel room

30

u/Madajuk 13d ago

I live in Wales. Dragons are cool, and statues of them appear in many places. (at least I love about wales) is that I believe it has the most castles in Europe. there aren't many large well preserved ones but I love visiting the ruins

6

u/Wildcatb 13d ago

I visited as a child, with my teacher who grew up there. Beautiful country, and I loved wandering around the couple castles we visited.

7

u/FrenchBoguett 13d ago

There are ruins? That's so cool! What would you recommend for a tourist?

14

u/ScabrousKinderEgg 13d ago

If you love beaches, you should absolutely go to the Gower Peninsula - some beauuutiful beaches and bays down here! The ruins of Pennard Castle overlook Three Cliffs Bay (my personal favourite bay) and Pennard Burrows, the whole place is especially pretty in the summer, and so so peaceful

7

u/DatFilmCo 13d ago

Three cliffs bay is legit one of the most beautiful bits of Welsh coastline. Low tide with the cave that goes straight through from the land side to the sea is amazing.

u/PembrokeshirePromise 13d ago

There are many ruins in the form of castles, Stone Age monuments, Iron Age forts…

I am from Pembrokeshire, which is a county in the South West of Wales. We have some incredible beaches, lots of hiking, scenery, history… the list goes on.

It is also home to Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, which is a 240 mile-long national park, hugging the coast.

You have things like St Govan’s Chapel, The Green Bridge of Wales, Pentre Ifan (check my post history, I recently went there), the famous beaches, small towns like Tenby and Saundersfoot, too.

If you’re into Harry Potter, there’s a beach called Freshwater West where the scenes of Dobby’s untimely death was filmed. Robin Hood (Russell Crowe’s version) was also filmed on the same beach.

There’s lots here; come visit, say hi! But, please, take your rubbish with you.

I've tried folding that dragon a bunch of times in the past but it never came out looking this good, awesome job!

51

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

Thanks! Yeah, this Ancient Dragon can be a bit tricky...had to do a few breaks because I felt like some steps were too much lol

16

u/Asocial_Stoner 13d ago

What kind of paper did you use?

19

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

70x70 cm double tissue! :D

6

u/loldoge34 13d ago

Was looking for this, looks amazing. I have some nice paper sitting that I could fold into an Ancient Dragon.

Ever folded a ryujin?

4

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

I never folded it, I've seen it so many times that, for myself, it lost its initial charm. I'd rather fold other things :D

50

What! That is absolutely insane, the dragon is absolutely next fucking level.

7

u/RoboT-Rexth 13d ago

I checked that sub to see what’s so next fucking level that this dragon couldn’t compete. And have concluded that sub is garbage. A guy showering..? Himself with two beers. Wow…

I have done some basic origami and it’s so damn hard! So congrats OP! You did a killer job and this is absolutely insanely amazing :)

Saddest SCP entry ever.

36

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago edited 13d ago

Some details: Model is called Ancient Dragon Another (or 2.0), and it's designed by Satoshi Kamiya. I folded it from a 70x70 cm square of double tissue paper! Time taken: a bit to the 20h mark, I wasn't rushing at all. I didn't sleep that much these days because i could only fold at night (because of work), but I'm entirely satisfied with this attempt! Hope you guys like it :D

EDIT: i I thought I posted this comment, but apparently I didn't, so I hope people are gonna see it. Next project will be Eren Yeager in his Attack Titan form!

Red Paper Origami Dragon

Level 8

ATK/DEF 3500/2000

Can only be summoned by method of folding a paper, weak to water, fire and dogs.

27

u/Internet_Wanderer 13d ago

Well done! I fold origami as a hobby so I understand what it takes to turn four corners into five limbs, a head, and horns, not to mentions the wings. Very, very well done

14

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

Thank you so much!! Yeah, sometimes it's a struggle, but so, so worth it!

8

u/4Tx_Gamer 13d ago

i was about to say "nice sculpture"

7

u/LordPoopyIV 13d ago

At some point origami stops being folding and turns into kneading :p

3

u/peopled_within 13d ago

Not to knock OP but I don't find it appealing personally. Folding yes, this, not so much. Kneading is the perfect word for it

2

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

Hahaha, complex origami has its downsides xD

5

u/Pukhimonster 13d ago

Wow! How long did it take you to make it? And is it with just one piece of paper? Amazing work!

27

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

A bit over the 20h mark. Yes, it's one paper, it's a very well known model in the origami community, so I had to give it a second go :D thank you!!

2

u/Pukhimonster 13d ago

That’s incredible! You’ve got some real talent, thank you for sharing it with us :)))

2

u/Abeyita 13d ago

How big was that one paper?

3

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

70x70cm!

5

u/Menarian 13d ago

Thats amazing. Where can i learn that?

18

u/SlightlyStable 13d ago

It takes a lot of free time, which you probably have as you are here on reddit.

Stationary art

5

u/rkaye8 13d ago

Would love to see the time lapse of the process. Also. NFL mods mad bad and sad.

5

u/Dw4r 13d ago

At which point does origami become just crumbling paper into shapes?

5

u/BlowMoreGlass 13d ago

I always feel the same, I really appreciate the patience and skill involved but the end result on these complicated pieces never looks clean to me. The paper gets absolutely mangled.

4

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

Managing to have a clean end result is a mad skill in itself, which I still yet don't have it sadly

3

u/Davadin 13d ago

Ok. Honest question. At which point do people consider art as origami compared to shaped paper mache?

I always feel origami are sharp edges folded flat stuff.

3

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

Check out origami complexity and you'll see that complex-super complex is a thing, and they get much more details than what you're thinking. Art evolves, just like any other thing imo

10

u/OrcEight 13d ago

Awesome. This is NFL to me! You are incredibly talented!

3

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

Thank you! :D

3

u/couplekizzjaguar 13d ago

The looks really detailed

3

u/Doubt_Confident 13d ago

Not usually something I would comment on but excellent job! I really dig it and great choice of colour for the paper by the way.

3

u/nudelsalat3000 13d ago

What I don't understand, is the starting point one rectangle paper and uncut? Or can you cut or interlock multiple papers?

6

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

One 70x70 uncut square. A very well known model in the community!

3

u/ChewedGum_ 13d ago

Ancient dragon is such a fun model. I never seen some detail the belly like that before. Nice job.

3

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

Thank you! Theoretically 2.0 has belly pleats that can be turned into armor - I decided to stuff the belly up so it'll never lose shape!

u/ChewedGum_ 13d ago

2

u/cycle_chyck 13d ago

Question: how many sheets of paper? Or is it an origami rule that you use only one?

3

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

It's one sheet, modular origami uses more sheets, but regular origami like this one, only one paper, and no cuts :D

2

u/cycle_chyck 13d ago

Well ... this explains the fuss, doesn't it ? :D

2

u/JonSnuu69 13d ago

Well, I didn't expect people to know all the technical things, so it's no problem xD

2

u/Notalurkeripromise 13d ago

3
