The moment a holy book is referenced by a sitting congressman when discussing legislation, they should be hushed and ridiculed. Not like this is a first, but it always amazes me when this is allowed by other senators and representatives. Imagine the bedlam that would ensue if somebody cited the Koran, or the Satanic Bible. But this particular book is beyond reproach. And they dare call themselves constitutionalists.

In his analogy, someone rips someone else's photo without their permission. But in reality, people may want to rip up their own photos because they don't want it, fully through their own volition. It's a completely different scenario! What the hell is he comparing?

His analogy is complete shit. The only thing he's right about is how asinine his reasoning is.

His analogy turned back to the baby would be murder, as someone just ripped the baby out of a pregnant mother. Abortion is still legally a choice made by the pregnant woman.

wouldn't technically the baby be grown from the cells and resources of the woman's body, and therefor be hers to do as she wishes?

I personally don't see much difference between having an organ/tumor removed and a fetus/embryo.

Like her body paid the price and supplied the work/materials, nobody has any say in the matter.

Technically all cells in the body are "living", so the whole definition of when life begins is stupid.

I don't believe in religion, and I believe in the separation of church and state, so I don't think ANY religious reasoning should be used for any policy/government making.

Since this removes any notion of a "soul" since there is no evidence of such a thing, they can keep their bible quotes to themselves.

These people are a disgrace.

159

u/trowzerss Dec 06 '21

As some have said, nobody has the right to exist at the expense of somebody else's life choices and health. I don't have the right to force someone to give me a bone marrow transplant or even a blood tranfusion, even if it saves my life. I have to have their consent, or it doesn't happen. Why should a bunch of cells in a uterus that might become a baby have more rights than the rest of us? Why does it have the right to co-op the mother's body and every aspect of her life for months when she doesn't consent?

24

u/TraditionalEffect546 Dec 06 '21

It's not taking every aspect of a womans life for months. It's taking every aspect of a womans life FOR 18 YEARS, at the least!!!!

Abortion is one of the most contentious topics of the last 50 years of American politics. I’m pretty sure Nancy Pelosi has thought about the issue before.

She’s not going to change her entire system of beliefs just because an insurrectionist makes a high-school level analogy about a thief ripping up a Polaroid. I mean WTF.

Abortion is a side issue. BLM is a side issue. Antifa is a side issue. Harris shopping in Paris is a side issue. The overarching principle is the consolidation and protection of wealth. Nothing else matters to the ones calling the shots. If women and kids are collateral damage, c'est la vie. The Christian Right are useful tools, that is all.

During the fall 2016 semester, Cawthorn attended Patrick Henry College, studying political science, but earned mostly D grades and dropped out. He said his grades were low primarily because his injuries had interfered with his ability to learn.[9] Cawthorn said in a deposition, "You know, suffering from a brain injury after the accident definitely I think it slowed my brain down a little bit. Made me less intelligent. And the pain also made reading and studying very difficult."

So, apparently, he's a self-admitted idiot with a "slow brain". Who the fuck voted for this guy?

281

u/fivefivew_browneyes Dec 06 '21

Idiots voted for him. What’s worse is who he beat: a retired U.S. Air Force colonel, attorney, educator, politician, and former administrative law judge, Moe Davis. But because he had the little “D” after his name he lost to Cawthorn, who proudly visited Hitler’s vacation home and has multiple sexual harassment allegations reported against him from his college days.

24

u/rudolph_ransom Dec 06 '21

Fun fact: Hitler's vacation home, a.k.a. "Berghof Obersalzberg", was destroyed by the Allied Forces after the war to prevent a shrine for people who can't let tth past go. Actually not much to see there.

Looking at his tweets, he actually visited the "Kehlsteinhaus" which is on top of the "Kehlstein" mountain. This building was more for representation than for vacation. Hitler himself didn't like it much there because it took him too long to get up there.

I've been there myself, it's cool for views and for hiking. However, I would not brag about visiting "Hitler's vacation home".

This Bible is entirely silent about abortion. It's never mentioned anywhere in any book.

The closest we have to a biblical reference is in Exodus where it specifies that if a pregnant woman gets caught up in a fight between 2 men and miscarries, the offending man must pay a small fine.

So, as far as the Bible is concerned, a fetus's 'life' isn't as sacred as these pricks would have you believe.

Its only worth the value of "a small fine."

293

u/Mochigood Dec 05 '21

There's also a section where an woman suspected of infidelity is to take a certain concoction, and if she is unfaithful her womb will rot. No care there if she's pregnant at all, and some say that it's actually an abortifacient. https://biblia.com/bible/nasb95/numbers/5/11-31

Bible literally says life begins at the first breath.

Cawthorn would seem to agree, considering he shot his own argument down with that part where he says something like they "meet death before they breathe life".

Sounds to me like he agrees a fetus isn't actually alive.

I don't have any stake in the abortion argument but I am curious why all these unborn are the "image of God" and deserve to be protected but the already born kids at the border, in the middle east, and in horrific environments here at home apparently aren't deserving of such protection.

411

u/StasisTelestoUser Dec 05 '21 edited Dec 05 '21 Silver Take My Energy Narwhal Salute Bless Up

Some of my conservative friends get mad when I say the nation-building group of the founding fathers were overwhelmingly adherers to the Deist way of thinking about religion. Denial of Jesus, Miracles, etc. they believed that a God created everything then said deuces.

They also don't like when I read Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli: "As the Government of the United States of American is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of the Mussulmen; and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties that nonpretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."

Pretty clear as day that the US was not founded on Christian principles and in most cases founded on Enlightenment principles that were, at times, anti-thetical to institutionalized religion. I'm a Christian but I do not let the church drive my beliefs on society. Churches that become overtly political need to have their tax exemption taken because it becomes less about God and more akin to a political machine. The conservative victim complex has morphed into this desire to create a theocratic republic while at the same time voting in a man who was likely raping kids with his buddy Epstein. I don't know. I'm sick of politics at this point because these pathological fuckers don't really care.

They believe the US was founded as a "Christian nation"

Lately, it's because of Cold War propaganda, especially if they say the US was founded on Judeo-Christian principles:

The term became widely used in the United States during the Cold War to suggest a unified American identity opposed to communism. Theologian and author Arthur A. Cohen, in The Myth of the Judeo-Christian Tradition, questioned the theological validity of the Judeo-Christian concept, suggesting that it was instead essentially an invention of American politics.

Also,

The term "Judæo Christian" first appeared in the 19th century as a word for Jewish converts to Christianity.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judeo-Christian

How could the US be based on Judeo-Christian principles if the term 'Judeo-Christian' first appeared after the signing of the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution?

My boomer parents are fundamentalist to the core...and the most dangerous thing about them is their gullibility and naivety, combined with an irrational fear (and consequent demonization of) almost all unknowns . They can be manipulated into hating almost anyone or anything if they believe "it's against God's will" or it's "evil".

They literally do not care. Many specifically disagree with the separation of church and state. There is a fair portion of folk who want America to be a Christian Theocracy.

Exactly, I'm part of a diff religion and this guy saying this shit about my body makes me want to hurl. My body has nothing to do with God and for our lawmakers to be placing their religious beliefs over the country is an abomination.

Edit: Also he talks exactly like a priest or pastor does. With pauses for effect, and metaphors that don't actually apply. After all, no one is surprise coming up to you and giving you an abortion (ripping up your photo). Abortions are a choice, they'd be ripping up the photo themselves and going about their day.

28

u/cooterbreath Dec 05 '21 edited Dec 06 '21

MC needs to fuck off with this shit. It's absurd how stupid their voters are.

Edit: Imagine you're a woman and a man comes out, rips up your stupid picture, and then rapes you. The man infected you with HIV and impregnated you. You will die from the disease if you try to have a baby, which will be born infected. In Texas she would be a fucking felon if she found someone to do the procedure.

I am so fucking sick of these psychopathic Fundie Conservatives. The world is upside-down right now. Fuck

61

u/cturtl808 Dec 05 '21

In real time, while on the subject of Gilead, when they close the borders... any thoughts on how people will flee? Are we looking to escape across the Rio Grande going into Mexico? Will Canada take on the role like it has in the show?

60

u/PenguinLegos Dec 05 '21

I live in New England. So I’m racing to Canada. it depends on proximity to your location. But I’d assume Canada would try to do the right thing. Mexico is a risk because many parts of it are poor and the crime rate is high. I’d rather risk it with Canada.

41

u/cturtl808 Dec 05 '21

Canada is 16 hours by car for me. Mexico is 3.5. I speak Spanish and have been brushing up my language knowledge. Mexico may be riskier but I don't know that I could make it to Canada.

I’d like to add that it isn’t some sob story like you will be led to believe by the right. Madison and his friend who was driving were on the way to Florida from app state for spring back (or vice versa at the end of spring break) and both drinking. It is entirely his own fault. His only job he’s ever had was working at chick fil a. He also didn’t pass a single class for his short time he was in college.

140

u/faus7 Dec 05 '21

He also tried to rape a few times incollege

130

u/phrenq Dec 05 '21

Cawthorn attributed his poor grades in college to “suffering from a brain injury after the accident definitely — I think it slowed my brain down a little bit,” he said in the deposition. “Made me less intelligent. And the pain also made reading and studying very difficult.”

So naturally he decided to run for congress instead.. (source)

17

u/Luxpreliator Dec 06 '21

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madison_Cawthorn

His wiki page has him flopping around constantly with what he says. He puffs his chest out and lies then gets caught and recant.

He has said that he would "like to be the face of the Republican Party when it comes to health care.

our culture today is trying to completely de-masculate [sic] all of the young men", because "they don’t want people who are going to stand up

I kinda forgot about this turd but he's definitely one of those alpha frat bro types that's got a thing for trump, Q, conspiracies. Even said he doesn't care about legislation he just wants to use his position as a soap box.

There's a reason why young conservative men generally don't have many friends who are women.

His metaphor is garbage.

First, no one comes up and just aborts the child you want.

Second, a better metaphor is that it's like pressing Start on a printer. The instructions are there to make something, but it's not fully made. At any point there could be a failure. Power could go out. Print head can jam. Or, you can hit cancel.

113
